Can I Mix My Seeds

Our Seed Kits have been carefully researched and exhaustively tested to determine the optimal growing conditions and nutritional requirements for each plant chosen. Plants are then combined within each Seed Kit to be compatible with one another not only in their light, water flow and nutrient requirements, but also their growth rate and size.

For these reasons, mixing between types of Seed Kits generally does not work well, although if you combine herbs with herbs, greens with greens, and flowering/fruiting crops with other flowering/fruiting crops (such as tomatoes with peppers), it is generally okay, provided you take care to prune them properly in order to keep them all about the same height.

Compatibility Between 3-Pod, 6-Pod, and 7-Pod Seed Kits

The 3- and 6-Pod AeroGarden models and the 7-Pod AeroGarden models have very different Seed Pods because they have very different water-delivery systems.

7-Pod AeroGardens have a pump which circulates oxygen-rich water up through the seed pods and over the roots of the plants, and their Seed Pods are about an 1 1/2 inches long. Because the Pump is circulating water up and over through the Grow sponges, the pods do not have to reach down into the water in the Bowl.

3- and 6-Pod AeroGardens
have an aerator to oxygenate the water, and their Seed Pods are about 3 1/4 inches long so that they reach down into the water in the Bowl, allowing them to draw water up through the Grow Sponge into the roots of the young plants.
Compatibility Between Seed Kits

A 6-Pod Seed Kit can easily be split and used in two 3-Pod AeroGardens, or two 3-Pod Seed Kits can be combined and used in one 6-Pod AeroGarden (provided both are the same "Select" type: Vegetables, Salad Greens, Herbs, or Flowers).

A 7-Pod Seed Kit
cannot be used in 3- or 6-Pod AeroGardens because the Seed Pods are not long enough to reach the water in the Bowl.

A 3- or 6-Pod Seed Kit is not designed to be used in a 7-Pod AeroGarden, but can be made to work with some modifications. If you wish to use 3- or 6-Pod Seed Kits in a 7-Pod AeroGarden, you will need to do the following:
  • Remove the two internal struts that go across the Bowl from front to back. They are just press-fit and are easy to lift up and out.
  • Understand that the two Grow Pods on the outside edges of the AeroGarden will hit the sides of the Bowl, and so will sit somewhat askew. They will, however, grow perfectly well.
  • Alternatively, you may cut the two outside Seed Pod baskets down to about to 2 3/8 inches long using a stout pair of scissors or wire cutters, so that the pods will sit level. To do this, remove the Seed Pod label, and take the Grow Sponge out of the Grow Basket. It is important to cut them separately so that the sponge will sit at the correct height in the basket. Cut 3/4" off the bottom of the Grow Basket, and 5/8" off the bottom of the Grow Sponge.
  • Cover the seventh, unused Grow Surface opening with either an AeroGarden Plant Spacer or some other light-blocking cover, such as a clean milk jug cap or piece of aluminum foil, to keep light from entering the Bowl and causing algae to grow.
